Music and Arts in Albemarle County Schools

Best practice, high achieving schools around the world regularly incorporate music and art as part of their core curricula.  Studies have been done showing the relevance and direct correlation of the arts to math, science and literacy since the 1960's.
( http://www.newhorizons.org )  Top jobs in high paying fields such as computer programming and technology consider critical and creative thinking to be the most important skills for new employees.  They also value the ability to work collaboratively sometimes with team members scattered around the world.  All skills taught through the Arts.  Although a few schools in our area consider their bands programs to be  of high importance, primarily due to parent demand, art, or the ability to communicate visually is highly prized in the work force, but rarely thought of as a core study in our schools.

The new double blocking system in our middle schools has already made it impossible for many students to experience the arts at school.  Furthermore the implementation of more double blocking of core subjects (language and math) for more students will have an even greater effect both on student access to the arts and the continuation of some of the arts and exploratory programs.  Art and music are considered core classes in top achieving schools in places like Japan and in countries like Australia where students must compete with Japanese students.  Australia has even set up international art schools to try to level the playing field.

For those of us wanting Albemarle County to have a world class school system that really helps all children reach their potential the best place to start is with your School Board Representative.  Let the school know if you value and  want arts included as core curricula in your school.  The next Albemarle County School Board meeting will be March 12, 2009 at 6:30 in the county office building.  For more information on school board scheduling and representatives go to   http://schoolcenter.k12albemarle.org
